Summer 2026 Flightless Bird Showcase
Creative Writing-Inspiration Page
Rules (aka: very chill guidelines)
How to participate:
Everyone will have the same images as their inspiration. They are at the bottom of this page.First Line:
Everyone will start with the same first line: “The newspapers got the story wrong, as newspapers often did.”No rules on creativity:
There are no rules on style- it can be a short story, long story, poem, or anything else that you would like to share
There are no rules on length- It can be the shortest story ever told or a full book
To keep the theme consistent, the sketch of the Ostrich should be the major piece of inspiration. It does not need to be the focus of your piece though. The windmill in Don Quixote would be a good parallel.
There are photographs from the 1910’s of different people. Feel free to assign names to them and use them in your story.
There is a scan of a postcard which you can reference in your writing if you would like to.
The postmark is Worcester Mass, 2:30 AM Jan 3, 1911
If you would like high resolution images of the photos and post card, just let me know.
Most important rule:
Have fun with it. This is about creativity, not perfection.Timeline:
Approximately 3 weeks. I will collect your finished work and post it online for all to enjoy! I would like to get your finished works in the last week of July so I can have them uploaded by August.
